FAQS

Can you diagnose?

Yes, chiropractors are qualified to diagnose therefore you do not need a referral from your GP to see us. However we may refer you to your GP or provide the GP with a report of your condition (with your consent) if we feel it is necessary.

What is the cracking noise?

A common misconception is that the sound is that of an air bubble popping inside your joint, however it is in fact the formation of a bubble within the joint. All of our joints have a small amount of fluid in them that helps to lubricate the joint surfaces, this is called synovial fluid. When the pressure of that fluid rapidly decreases, gases that were previously dissolved within the fluid forms into a bubble within the joint. We often refer to this as a cavitation.

What should I wear?

We provide gowns for those who would like to wear them however comfortable, loose fitting clothing is ideal for chiropractic treatment, or stretchy clothing such as leggings.

What’s the difference between chiropractic and osteopathy?

Very little! Both chiropractors and osteopaths are qualified to diagnose and treat musculoskeletal problems and treat using similar techniques. Chiropractors are also qualified to take x-rays and some clinics have x-ray facilities on-site. The most important thing is that you find a practitioner you trust and feel comfortable with whether a chiropractor or osteopath.

Should I use ice or heat?

Your chiropractor will be able to advise you on this after talking to you about your condition, however it is usually suggested that people with acute pain use ice on the affected area, and people with chronic pain use heat.

What is dry needling?

Dry needling is also known as medical acupuncture. Needles are inserted into the muscle to help it relax and reduce pain. The needles are thin and are not painful, most people do not feel them during insertion or treatment, however you may experience a dull ache in the muscle being treated, similar to the feeling of getting a massage in a tight muscle. Here at Gillingham Chiropractic Clinic we are registered with the local council, giving us licence to use medical acupuncture.

Does treatment hurt?

Treatment can be uncomfortable as we work on tender areas, however we will always work within your comfort levels. Some people may feel sore for one or two days after treatment, however this is completely normal and will settle down.

How long does the consultation last?

40 mins for the new patient examination and 20 mins for a treatment. Please arrive around 5 mins early for your first appointment to fill in a couple pieces of paperwork to register yourself at the clinic.

Im pregnant can I still be treated?

Yes, chiropractic is safe for both mother and baby. Back pain is very common during pregnancy and you do not have to wait until the baby is born to get treated.

Are you wheelchair accessible?

There is a small step coming into the clinic and we have an additional step to make it easier for those with mobility issues. We don’t have a ramp at present but have several patients who use wheelchairs and walking aids who attend the clinic. We are always looking into ways to make our awkward little building more accessible.

Can I take painkillers before an appointment?

Many people believe that if they take painkillers before an appointment, the chiropractor will not be able to tell what is wrong. While pain does help us find the cause of the problem, the chiropractor will take a detailed history and perform a thorough examination and will still be able to diagnose you should you choose to take painkillers, so if you are in a lot of pain, you do not need to suffer by stopping the pain killers before your appointment.

Do you work with insurers?

We do not work directly with insurers, however most companies these days will reimburse you for chiropractic treatments. We can provide you with the documentation you need to claim.
