5 Myths about Chiropractic
1. Joint cracking gives you arthritis: this is the biggest chiropractic myth! The adjustments Chiropractors use are a safe way to relieve pain and loosen off stiff joints and do not cause arthritis. However examples such as cracking your knuckles several times a day every day may effect the strength of your grip in your hands - so best to leave the cracking to a professional or at least try to resist cracking every day.
2. Anyone can call themselves a Chiropractor: "Chiropractor" is a protected title, meaning that only those qualified can call themselves a chiropractor. It is regulated by the General Chiropractic Council (GCC). Only those who have completed the masters degree in Chiropractic can register.
3. They only treat backs: around 80% of people will suffer with back pain at some point in their lives, so yes, we do see A LOT of backs! However we work with all muscles, joints, ligaments, etc. We also see a lot of shoulder, knee, hip, and even jaw problems - the list goes on!
4. It is dangerous: Chiropractors are highly trained in their field and serious side effects are extremely rare and usually due to an underlying condition being missed as opposed to the treatment itself. The most common side effect is that you might feel a little bit sore for a day or two after a treatment!
5. Once you start seeing a chiropractor, you will never stop! This is 100% up to you as a patient. Some people stop coming once they are out of pain, some love what chiropractic has done for them so much that they choose to come in for regular appointments as a bit of a "body MOT" - similar to how you would see a dentist for a check up.
